Our ability to react to our environment is completely dependent on our senses. Our eyes are one of the most sensitive areas of our body, with the ability to see a difference in over ten million colors. We rely heavily on our eyes for everything we do, so keeping them protected is critical to our safety. Whether it is sawdust, bright light, or chemical spray, there are many things we encounter in our daily tasks that could damage our eyes. Wearing the proper Personal Protective Equipment is the most effective way to stay safe, and keep your eyes protected.

      Types of Hazards

Although Personal Protective Equipment is our last line of defense against an injury, it only works when it is the right type for the task and environment. Understanding the hazards in your workplace and learning what to do to stay safe begins with the Hazard Assessment. This assessment will cover daily tasks and potential hazards, as well as what PPE should be used. Different types of hazards can include impacts with flying objects; exposure to excessive heat, chemicals, dust particles; and even bright intense light. Different types of eye protection will range from safety glasses, to goggles, to face shields. Some environment and tasks might also require a face mask or respirator.

      Training & Fit

One of the most critical factors in the effectiveness of your PPE is making sure it fits properly. If the Personal Protective Equipment you are using is not the right fit, you will not be protected. Both safety glasses and face masks must be the right size, snug in fit, and not be able to fall down or off as you are working. PPE should also be clean and free from scratches, tears and other signs of wear. All PPE should be fitted by a trained professional and fit tested on a regular basis.

      Prevention & Response

In addition to the proper fit, use, and storage of your Personal Protective Equipment, on going maintenance is also required. If your PPE ever develops any structural defects, such as dings, or pitted lenses, the PPE should be removed from service immediately. All PPE should be cleaned and sanitized after each use. If PPE is passed back and forth between employees, it should be thoroughly sanitized in between. When not in use, or the workday is over, all PPE should be safely stored in a clean environment with glasses in a glass case to protect them. If your job requires you to work with chemicals, an eye wash station must be set up nearby. Review with your supervisor how to use this station in case of an emergency.
