Fires erupt when a combustible material gets ignited. There are many different things which can combust including chemicals, paper, electronics, even cooking oils. Each type of fire will require a different extinguishing agent. There are five classes of fire extinguishers, each one specific to a certain type of fire. You can tell which extinguisher to use by its class and / or pictogram. Knowing these classes, and where your extinguisher is located is critical to your safety. Many work environments will have an "access" requirement for each extinguisher. This refers to how far the employee must travel to access the extinguisher.
