There are over 100,000 forklift accidents every year, making it one of the leading causes of workplace injury. Yet nearly every one was preventable. Even the most experienced drivers can cause an accident if they are speeding or not paying attention. Knowing how to operate and maintain a forklift is critical to your safety. This course will cover the following learning objectives:
SAFE OPERATING PROCEDURES
Before beginning any task with a forklift, it is important to do a visual walkthrough, inspecting the forklift and its various parts, and then test the mechanical parts of the forklift to make sure they are working properly.
Workplace hazards can be anywhere, or anything, from a wet floor to a joking coworker who wants to horse around. Besides the unexpected, speeding and improper turning contribute to the majority of workplace accidents. These types of accidents can be avoided by paying attention and knowing how to drive and operate your forklift.
Always anticipate the worst case scenario and be prepared for it. Know the route you need to travel, and know the weight of the load you need to carry. Make sure the forks are positioned properly and that the load is balanced. Never lift a load higher than necessary.
