Falls are one of the leading causes of injury in the workplace, and every year workers are killed by falls. They are also one of the most preventable injuries, and knowing which safety equipment to use and how to use it can go a long way to keeping you safe. In all construction environments, OSHA requires some form of fall protection for work performed over 6 feet off the ground. This includes guard rails, safety harnesses, hard hats and thick soled boots.
Fall protection is about more than working at heights; it is also about the holes and hazards beneath you. Proper protection must be in use at all times, including safety nets, guard rails and barricades.
You will use a variety of equipment in your workplace. It is important to know and understand the safety hazards and protections plans for each one, including scaffolds, steel erections, stairways, ladders, and aerial lifts.
